Submitted story

Teachers from GEAR UP partner schools recently met at the Wanda Bass Building on the McAlester campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College, for a demonstration of the TI-Nspire Navigator System. The TI-Nspire Navigator System creates a wireless classroom network that supports teaching and learning activities with TI-Nspire handhelds, further enhancing their effectiveness in the math and science classroom. This connected approach was developed following research into beneficial types of interactions between teachers and learners, enabling teachers to demonstrate activities, share documents and constructions immediately with the whole class, which supports individual and small group work. The new system is currently being used by pilot schools in England and Scotland to support collaboration, independent learning and assessment of learners' progress.

Using the TI-Nspire Navigator System, the teacher is able to follow the progress of all learners: an individual’s work can be shared with the whole class with or without naming them. Teachers have the opportunity to develop lessons, activities and questions in ways that are enriched by the use of ICT. With revised National Curricula asking teachers to focus on process as well as content, TI-Nspire Navigator adds new teaching options to the already powerful dynamic linking of the TI-Nspire handheld and its document structure.

Attending were Ruth Sprouse, Buffalo Valley Public School; Charles Karch, Canadian Public School; Patti Brannon and Jaclyn Ward, Crowder Public School; Stephanie Bowen, Indianola Public School; Cydney Meglemre Keota Public School; Deward Palmer, McCurtain Public School; Tonya McKnight, Moyers Public School; Brenda Reading, Panola Public School; Lisa Hilburn and Terrie Ober, Red Oak Public School; Judy Phillips and Patsey Porter, Whitesboro Public School; GEAR UP Web/Computer Tech Specialist George Larson; GEAR UP Project Assistant Helen Scott; and GEAR UP Project Director Linda Morgan.
